Chapter 23

A Dead Rabbit, An Ex, Chicken Wings, and French Fries are all You need!

The next day, Harriet parked her car on the corner across the street from the Five Points Cocktail Bar on San Pedro Square and hurried over. She loved the old glamorous gangster vibe the bar gave off. She opened the heavy glass door entered and headed for her favorite seat at the end of the bar near the back.

The Bartender walked over.

“I’ll have a Dead Rabbit and an order of Buffalo Chicken wings,” Harriet commanded. “Oh and add some French fries.”

“Coming right up.” The Bartender said.

Harriet checked her text messages as her drink was placed before her. She took a sip and then another. It was just what she needed.

When the chicken wings and fries were placed in front of her, she felt her spirits rise. She was on her second chicken wing when she felt someone hovering over her.

“Hey Harriet, mind if I join you,” the woman slid onto the stool next to her.

“Sophie Roberts, I haven’t seen you since the Charity ball!”

Sophie Roberts and Harriet went to high school together.

The two exchanged air hugs.

“Sorry, I don’t want to get chicken wing fingers on your work suit. You look the picture of professionalism. Got that law office vibe thing working for you,” Harriet declared.

“Why thank you, Ms. Harriet. I’ll take that as a compliment,” Sophie replied as she got the Bartender’s attention. “A Dirty Martini please.”

“Care for a French fry,” Harriet offered.

“So, you saying, hands off your Chicken wings, I take it?” Sophie asked.

“Yup!” Harriet growled gnawing on a bone.

“No problem, I know how you always love chicken wings,” she said helping herself to some fries.

“So, are you still working Sophie, or has Harold made you stay home and start working on starting your family?”

Harold Roberts and Sophie had been together since their sophomore year in high school.

“Harold can’t stop me from working, in fact, I just dropped off a deposition with a law firm near here. So, how did it go with that matchmaker, thing, with Isabella Deville?”

In between bites of chicken wings, Harriet had told Sophie the story about Isabella who was supposed to hook her up with his brother and the whole thing turned out to be a fiasco.

“I got to meet him, but my dance was cut short,” she lied. “You know Isabella had arranged for her brother to meet with a lot of women that night and some of them were so, controlling. Anyway, you know Isabella, she always wants to make sure I’m happy. She has already sent me out on several other dates.”

Harriet prayed Sophie didn’t check on any of this with Isabella or she’d discover she was really telling big ones.

The bartender placed Sophie’s drink in front of her.

“So, what are we drinking too?” Sophie asked.

Harriet chewed and swallowed another bite of her chicken wing before speaking. “Well, I don’t know about you, Sophie, but I’m drinking too fifty ways to break up a relationship. Whew! Maybe I mean fifty ways to find a new relationship.
